Wednesday evening, former 3-star wide receiver, Andrel Anthony, announced that he plans to depart the university.

Andrel Anthony is leaving Michigan

After two years in the Maize and Blue, Michigan receiver Andrel Anthony is headed out the door. The Wolverines could be looking a little thin at receiver next season, so don’t be too shocked if this move prompts Michigan football to pursue a replacement via the portal.

While Anthony was not the most impactful player on the field during Michigan’s 2021 or 2022 seasons, he had all of the pieces to become a top receiver on the Wolverines’ roster.

Anthony’s time in Ann Arbor

Andrel Anthony was a 3-star prospect out of high school and was given a composite grade of 0.8793 by 247 Sports. Anthony is a native of East Lansing, which is home to Michigan’s in-state rival, the Michigan State Spartans.

In year one of his Michigan career, Andrel Anthony’s stock skyrocketed. Anthony had a monster game in the Wolverines’ 37-33 loss at Michigan State, and recorded some solid numbers for a freshman. His first touchdown was a 93-yard catch — most of which came from his speed in space after hauling in the initial pass.

In 2021, Anthony caught 12 passes for 248 yards and three touchdowns. Many thought that 2022 would be a huge season for Andrel; however, that never really panned out. In fact, Anthony’s sophomore season got a bit worse.

This season, Anthony caught seven passes for 80 yards and one touchdown. He also recorded a tackle during the 2022 season.

What’s next for Anthony?

Despite not finding Michigan football to be a perfect fit, Andrel Anthony will find a new home elsewhere. He is an incredibly talented football player with a bright future and the tools to be immensely successful at the Power Five level.

For Michigan, it is time to find a replacement on the depth chart. For Anthony, it is time to find a new home and a scheme that plays to his strengths. While the Wolverines could be in for another great season in 2023, Anthony still accomplished a lot during his time in Ann Arbor.

The sophomore will finish his Michigan career with 328 yards and four touchdowns, not to mention two Big Ten Championship rings.
