Through five games of the 2023 season, Michigan football running back Donovan Edwards — who was pinned as one of the top backs in the game heading into the season — is yet to truly impress. That said, against Nebraska last weekend, Edwards seemed to finally find his legs despite his average stats. Earlier this week, Edwards addressed his slow start and assessed whether he has turned the corner heading into Week 6’s game against Minnesota tomorrow.
Did Donovan Edwards turn the corner against Nebraska?
Donovan Edwards is a star for Michigan football — even when he is not putting up massive stats, he is a force that opposing defenses need to keep a close eye on. That said, so far, he is yet to impress, though seemed to start to turn the corner last weekend against Nebraska.
“I feel like this last game was a good game for me,” Donovan Edwards said on Tuesday. “You know, I ran hard, I hit the hole better than — just looking for things. Of course, I want the big plays, but that’s gonna come. You know, the coaches have done a great job of telling me and just consoling me on just worrying about getting the, you know, like the four yards, the five yards, the six yards — and they challenged me. That’s what I needed. I needed that. Like I said, I’m just going to continue to do my thing. Just continue to run hard, hit the hole when it’s there.”
Edwards embracing whatever role Michigan football has for him
So far this fall, Donovan Edwards has carried the ball 47 times for 157 yards with no touchdowns. Heading into tomorrow’s game, a night matchup against the 3-2 Minnesota Golden Gophers, Edwards is not looking to put up flashy stats — he just wants to help his team win football games.
“Whatever the coaches need me to do man, I’m gonna embrace it,” Edwards said. “I love seeing Kalel (Mullings) get a touchdown, like the touchdown — I might be a little bit jealous that he got a touchdown before me — I’m just playing. I love the tuddy. I’m excited. I love being able to like look at Blake (Corum) eating, Kalel eating, Roman (Wilson) eating, JJ (McCarthy) eating, you know, the offensive line is doing a hell of a job, I love to see it. I love the success of the team and the program.”
