Yesterday, Michigan football marched into one of the toughest road environments in the Big Ten — the team’s first away game of the 2023 season — and beat the Nebraska Cornhuskers, 45-7. Not only that but the Wolverines‘ starters, such as JJ McCarthy, were pulled in the third and fourth quarters (gradually), once again showing that the Maize and Blue are legit title contenders this fall. Due to this solid showing, followed by a close call for the Georgia Bulldogs, analyst Joel Klatt has moved the Wolverines to No. 1 in the nation heading into Week 6 against Minnesota.

Joel Klatt of FOX Sports is one of the top analysts in college football, and after Michigan football improved to 5-0 on the season with a huge win at Nebraska, Klatt thinks the Wolverines should be No. 1.

Michigan football, which has been at No. 2 all year, likely won’t move up in today’s AP or coaches polls seeing as Georgia is still unbeaten, but it’s clear that some heads are starting to turn in regards to the Wolverines potentially being the country’s top team.

Heading into Week 5, there were some concerns about Michigan football; after all, the Wolverines were yet to truly impress through four weeks of the season despite claiming four-straight blowout wins over lesser opponents. While Nebraska is not a top team — perhaps not even a bowl team this year — the Cornhuskers matched up with Michigan quite well, boasting a top-10 rushing attack and the No. 1 rushing defense heading into the game.

Michigan’s 45-7 win over Nebraska told us a lot about the Wolverines — the defense is absolutely elite, JJ McCarthy is legit, Donovan Edwards is catching his stride, the offensive line is fixing its issues, and Roman Wilson is one of the best players in college football. This much has become evident heading into Week 6 at Minnesota, which will be the Wolverines’ second road test of the year.
