The Juwan Howard era of Michigan basketball came to an end on Friday as Warde Manuel announced he was making a change.
For many Michigan basketball fans, the news came as a relief. It’s also disappointing. Juwan Howard is a Michigan legend and he’ll always mean something to this program for his efforts as a player and a head coach who won a Big Ten championship.
Yet, with all the issues off the court and on it, it was clear that a new direction was needed. But maybe new isn’t always better. Maybe Michigan needs to go back to what it knows: John Beilein.
That’s been a common refrain among fans, but it hasn’t seemed realistic. For starters, it didn’t look like Juwan would be fired until recently. It’s also hard to imagine Beliein wants to get back into coaching. Unless you know John Beilein.
John Beilein return to Michigan basketball is possible
There were rumors of him being interested in the West Virginia job and according to a post on X by John U. Bacon, Beilein would be willing to consider a return as Michigan head coach, if he was asked.
“It has come to my attention that John Beilein might consider the Michigan men’s basketball head coaching position if asked, but I don’t know if he’ll be asked. We’re still in Nobody Knows Anything territory. Just about anything could happen at this point,” Bacon wrote.
Stayed tuned Michigan basketball fans, the dream might come true.
