After two tough losses to Nebraska in Lincoln, Michigan baseball rallied hard and came back to win game three of the series 3-1. The Wolverines arrived in Lincoln on a winning streak after a series sweep against rivals Michigan State and Ohio State, as well as wins against Central Michigan and Bowling Green at home.
Michigan’s loss to Nebraska in the first game of the series was their first loss since April, when Iowa swept the Wolverines in their three-game series. After their second loss to the Cornhuskers, it was clear the Wolverines were not willing to come out on the wrong end of a series sweep once again, especially as they near the close of the regular season.
Michigan Pulls Ahead For a 3-1 Win Over the Cornhuskers
Pitcher Tate Carey led the Wolverines on defense, pitching six scoreless innings with two strikeouts, only five hits, and two walks. Nebraska started to gain a bit of momentum with multiple runners in scoring position in the fifth and sixth innings, but Carey’s pitching held firm, resulting in one groundout in the fifth and three flyouts in the sixth to keep Nebraska off the board.
At bat, it was Cole Caruso who was the difference maker for the Wolverines. Caruso was responsible for two of Michigan’s three runs, with his 10th homerun of the season in the second inning, and his 11th in the ninth inning. The eighth inning opened with a Keegan O’Hearn walk, which eventually resulted in a run when Brayden Jefferis bunted with the bases loaded, giving the Wolverines a 2-1 lead before Caruso’s second homer to really put it away.
With the Wisconsin-Milwaukee game canceled, the Wolverines will close out their regular season with a three game series at home against Indiana.
