The transfer portal is open for business in college basketball, which means that for the Michigan basketball program, there is precious time to waste.
Michigan basketball needs a head coach. There is a bevy of candidates, but after all of the reported candidates were knocked out of the NCAA tournament or the NIT, it’s time for Michigan to act.
Dusty May feels like the first domino in college basketball. It felt like he was the favorite at one time, but Louisville might be his destination. There hasn’t been much buzz about May to Michigan basketball.
Buzz about Michigan basketball and Darian DeVries
There has been some buzz about Drake head coach Darian DeVries (my top choice). It’s not going to win the press conference but John Beilein didn’t either. He just won basketball games and that’s what Michigan needs to get back to doing.
DeVries certainly knows how to do that. He’s won at least 20 games in each of his six seasons with Drake. The Bulldogs have reached the NCAA tournament three times, won a tournament game, and in four of the six seasons, they made the NCAA tournament or won a league championship. Sign me up.
Since he’s from the Dana Altman/Greg McDermott coaching tree, he’s known as a technician, plus his son, Tucker DeVries is the two-time MVC Player of the Year. He would probably join his dad, which would help the rebuilding process for next season.
Danny Sprinkle had one player back at Utah State and the Aggies are in the round of 32. It can be done with the right coach and the right players. DeVries feels like the right coach to me. Niko Medved also makes sense and Amir Abdur-Rahim (South Florida head coach) is growing on me.
According to Sam Webb of The Michigan Insider, DeVries was being “vetted” by the Michigan search firm. He might be the new favorite. Regardless, Michigan basketball needs a head coach soon and it should be sometime this week. The key word being should.
