No. 15 Michigan men’s basketball avoided a second straight loss Monday night with a 49-46 win on the road against Nebraska. The biggest lead of the game came when the Wolverines (21-6, 13-3 Big Ten) were up six points with 4:25 left in the game. The win moved Michigan into a temporary tie with Michigan State for the Big Ten lead.

Michigan shot 29.5 percent from the field for the game, but the Cornhuskers managed to do worse (25.8%). Nebraska guard Brice Williams made three 3’s in the first four minutes, but as a team the Cornhuskers went 3-for-25 the rest of the way.

The Wolverines went into halftime up 25-21, and Roddy Gayle Jr. (8 points) and Vladislav Goldin (6 points) were leading the way offensively. Michigan went 1-of-14 on three-pointers in the first period, and finished 5-of-27 (18.5%).

It was a rather hectic second half, and Michigan turned the ball over eight times to Nebraska’s five. The Wolverines were able to put a lid on the basket and hold the Cornhuskers to 1-of-9 over the final six minutes of the game. It was needed too, because Michigan didn’t score (aside from free throws) for the final 4:25 of regulation.

Williams ended with a game-high 26 points, and no other Nebraska player scored more than six. Michigan had three players score in double-figures: Gayle Jr. (12), Tre Donaldson (11) and Danny Wolf (10). Wolf also tied Goldin for a game-high ten rebounds.

The Wolverines are set to host Rutgers next on Thursday (Feb. 27).
