On Friday, the University of Michigan announced that it has terminated first-year co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Matt Weiss. The Wolverines are moving on from Weiss amid a university-based police investigation into a report of computer access crimes at Schembechler Hall in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

The reports initially came in late-December during the same three-day period as the NCAA’s Early Signing Period for college football. The Wolverines will now likely hand over offensive play-calling duties to Sherrone Moore — the other half of Michigan’s 2022 co-offensive coordinator system.

Matt Weiss out

The details of what Matt Wiess did are still unclear; however, we know that it was a computer access crime committed at Schembechler Hall. Additionally, we know that Weiss willingly allowed U-M police to search his home earlier this month amid the investigation. The computer access crimes are thought to be illegal access or viewing of emails, though details are still uncertain.

Michigan’s official statement

Here is Michigan’s official statement on the firing of Matt Weiss:

“After a review of university policies, the athletic department has terminated the appointment of co-offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Matt Weiss. Consistent with university policy, we will have no further comment on this personal matter.”

What could this mean for Michigan football?

As the Wolverines gear up for what is expected to be a massive 2023 season, this is just another distraction in the news. I am sure we will find out more about the Matt Weiss situation in the coming days; however, for now we are all still in the dark.

One thing is for sure right now: the Wolverines will either need a new OC or will be forced to remove the “co” label from Sherrone Moore’s position heading into the 2023 season.
