Tuesday night, ESPN reported that a key member of the Michigan football coaching staff was placed on leave amid a police investigation surrounding the program. Matt Weiss — the Wolverines’ co-offensive coordinator — may be a part of the investigation for a report of computer access crimes at Schembechler Hall back in December.

Why was Weiss placed on leave?

According to ESPN, the school’s police department told ESPN that it is investigating a “report of computer access crimes,” which occurred in December of 2022 at Schembechler Hall in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Furthermore, the police released a statement when asked specifically about Michigan coach Matt Weiss; though no one was mentioned by name.

According to ESPN’s article: “The spokesman said that Weiss has not been with the team or in the building recently. Sources told ESPN that Weiss has not been on the road recruiting for the Wolverines.”

From the sounds of it, the other half of the Wolverines’ co-offensive coordinator system — Sherrone Moore — may lose the “co” label somewhat soon — things do not appear to be going in Weiss’s favor, though it is all speculation at the moment.

A statement from Matt Weiss

Here is Matt Weiss’s statement to ESPN regarding the police reports:

“I am aware of the ongoing investigation by the University of of Michigan Police Department and fully cooperating with investigators. I look forward to the matter being resolved. Out of respect for the integrity of the investigation, I will not have any further comment.”

A statement from the University of Michigan police department

A statement from University of Michigan deputy chief of police Crystal James:

“The University of Michigan Police Department is investigating a report of computer access crimes that occurred at Schembechler Hall during December 21-23, 2022. Since this is an ongoing investigation there is no additional information to share.”

As the we approach spring ball for the 2023 Michigan football season, this is a situation to keep an eye on. Weiss is still under contract with the Wolverines and was a key part of Michigan’s No. 6 total and scoring offense last season, and would be a huge loss for Jim Harbaugh heading into the 2023 season.
