Michigan football added a weapon to its secondary on Wednesday as four-star DB Elijah Dotson (Belleville, MI) flipped his commitment from Pitt. Dotson had been committed to the Panthers since May.

When Jim Harbaugh and his staff left, the Wolverines dropped on Dotson’s list. Over the past couple of months, Michigan was able to catapult itself back into the conversation.

“Michigan was originally my top school, then the staff left, some things changed and Pittsburgh was a great option,” Dotson said to On3. “It was a tough decision and I had to think about it a lot, but in the end, I had to do what was best for me.

“I went on my official visit to Michigan in October, and really from about the middle of the season, they have been recruiting me more, more and more. They came on strong and I have decided Michigan is best for me.”

When it came down to it, playing style and proximity to home were the deciding factors for Dotson.

“Michigan has a great staff. Coach Sherrone Moore and coach Lamar Morgan have been recruiting me hard and both are good guys and good coaches,” Dotson said. “With Michigan, I can be a hometown player too. That was big for me. Then the style of defense they run. It fits my style, they like my versatility and they see me as a safety with good range and physicality that can play in their scheme.”

Dotson said his skillset is similar to a current star in the Michigan defensive backfield.

“I watch Michigan’s DBs all the time,” Doston previously told On3. “I mean, Will Johnson came out of (the state of) Michigan. Whenever I watch him, I feel like I can become that type of player.”
