Jim Harbaugh’s 2023 Wolverines look as good as anyone on paper; however, there are a few needs that the program has when it comes to depth heading into the fall opener. The Michigan football transfer portal class has already hauled in seven commitments, and with the spring portal window here, the Wolverines may want to add even more outside talent. On Wednesday, former 5-star EDGE Sav’ell Smalls hit the portal, and could be on Michigan’s radar.

Former 5-star EDGE could be a perfect target for Michigan football transfer portal

For the second season in a row, the Michigan Wolverines are losing two incredibly talented edge rushers following a Big Ten title-winning season. Mike Morris (NFL Draft) and Eyabi Okie (transfer portal) are both on their way out the door, leaving some room for concern about Michigan’s EDGE depth this fall. Luckily for the Wolverines, there are plenty of options in the transfer portal right now, including former 5-star EDGE Sav’ell Smalls.

A potential transfer target?

Sav’ell Smalls was a member of the 2020 recruiting class and boasts an ideal 6-foot-3, 265-pound frame, which could be a head-turner in Ann Arbor. Throughout his time with the Washington Huskies, Smalls never managed to compile gaudy numbers, though the frame and talent are clearly there.

Smalls was rated as a 247 Sports Composite 5-star EDGE as a high school recruit and was ranked as the No. 30 recruit nationally, the No. 3 EDGE, and the No. 1 recruit in Washington. During his initial recruitment, Michigan football had him on their target list, though didn’t make the cut; now, the Wolverines may have a second shot at this once sought-after edge rusher.
