After winning two straight Big Ten titles and making the College Football Playoff in consecutive seasons, it may come as a surprise to some that Michigan football likely has its best roster in decades right now. From experience to depth and production, it seems as if Jim Harbaugh has never had a better roster during his nearly 9-year tenure in Ann Arbor. That being said, the Wolverines have one major concern ahead of the new season: cornerback depth. Recently, Harbaugh cleared up a few things, including Amorion Walker and more.

Amorion Walker still considered a starter for Michigan football

One of the major storylines to come out of spring ball was the emergence of Amorion Walker as a standout defensive back. Walker, a big-bodied former three-star wide receiver, was praised for his potential. However, during Michigan’s April 1st spring game, he appeared to be far from a finished product. Nonetheless, Jim Harbaugh thinks that Amorion Walker is right on track, so Maize and Blue fans should keep an eye on him ahead of the 2023 season.

“I thought he did really good, really well,” Jim Harbaugh said at a recent event, according to The Wolverine. “Every day was a learning experience for him and he really kind of epitomized [the notion of] better today than yesterday, better tomorrow than today.”

In addition to this high praise, reports confirm that Jim Harbaugh still sees Amorion Walker as a starting cornerback opposite of Will Johnson, who is the Wolverines’ clear-cut CB1 after an impressive true freshman season last fall.

Will Johnson undergoes surgery — what it means for Jim Harbaugh and the Wolverines

Yesterday, reports confirmed that Will Johnson, Michigan’s rising sophomore star, indeed had surgery over the offseason. He claims he will be back and ready to go by the season’s start, but it raises more important questions for Michigan football ahead of the 2023 season regarding depth. That being said, the Wolverines are hosting their top remaining transfer portal target this week and could secure the former UMass star to address the need for more depth.

Jim Harbaugh continued to express his satisfaction with the 2023 cornerback room, stating that he has been quite pleased thus far. If nothing else, Michigan football is trending in the right direction when it comes to the defensive backfield.

“Where it left in spring ball, I was pretty darn pleased It could be some of the best corners we’ve had, two of the best corners we’ve ever had,” Jim Harbaugh stated. “We’ll see, we’ll see how it goes the rest of the summer and in training camp.”

Cornerback success must turn into wins this fall

The question now is not whether or not the cornerback room will be impressive this fall but rather how impressive this year’s defensive backfield will be, all said and done. The pieces of the puzzle are all there for Michigan football; now, the Wolverines need to assemble them and watch as they turn into another Big Ten title-winning campaign this fall.
