We have been pounding the drum about Michigan football and its collection of elite talent. That was reinforced by Lindy’s College Football Preview Magazine which hit stands and has the Wolverines with as many first-team All-Americans as anyone in college football.

Will Johnson, Colston Loveland, and Mason Graham — three 2022 signees — were all projected as first-team All-Americans. Johnson was a former five-star prospect and wearing No. 2, the in-state prospect has lived up to the hype. At times, he has even reminded me of Charles Woodson.

I’m not at all surprised that Johnson was named a preseason All-American. He’s got seven interceptions over the last two seasons. He also bested Marvin Harrison Jr. in their matchups the past two seasons, notching an interception against Ohio State, plus one in the national title game.

Michigan football has as elite talent

Johnson might have been the first cornerback off the board in the 2024 NFL draft if he was eligible to be selected. Yet, the same things were said about Mason Graham too.

The defensive tackle has been elite and has had an incredible career in just two seasons with Michigan football. His overtime tackle for loss against Alabama will live on forever.

Kenneth Grant should have received some consideration too. For my money, Graham and Grant are the two best defensive tackles in college football — just not the best tandem. Maybe that’s being a homer, but I wouldn’t trade anyone for either of those two.

Colston Loveland, the tight end from Gooding, Idaho was the other first first-team preseason All-American. Another projected first-round pick, Loveland had 45 receptions for 649 yards and four touchdowns last season.
