Michigan football QB commitment ‘can be a dream dual-threat quarterback’

I know that some Michigan football fans are worried about the state of recruiting in the past few cycles. Even in 2025, the Wolverines have just five commitments so far, even if all five are blue-chip prospects.

The blue-chip ratio is a thing for a reason and over the past two recruiting classes, Michigan has a healthy number of blue-chip commitments and signings.

Yet, another reason for optimism and not to worry as much as some are has been the way Michigan football has been able to recruit at quarterback. Jadyn Davis was ranked in the top 10 in the 2024 class at the quarterback position according to the 247 Sports composite rankings. He also ranked 115th overall.

In the 2025 class, Michigan football might have found an even better quarterback, at least one that might fit better down the road and that’s Carter Smith, who is ranked 152 overall in the 2025 class and 13th among quarterbacks.

Michigan football is getting another talented QB

Smith is also a guy I think will be ranked higher by signing day than he is today. One thing to remember is that Smith was also a potential pro baseball prospect. Now, he’s focused on football and according to EJ Holland of The Wolverine, he’s been working with Brock Purdy’s QB guru and it’s working.

Holland highlighted some passes from a spring practice of Smith’s on Wednesday. It’s clear that Smith has improved as a passer and Holland came away impressed writing about the 4-star QB: “He can be the dream dual-threat quarterback.”

Smith has drawn some comparisons to Avery Johnson, a dynamic dual-threat quarterback for Kansas State. Johnson is so dynamic in fact, Kansas State ran off Will Howard because Johnson is their preferred starter. That’s how Ohio State landed its starter by the way, which will be smart if they actually run the ball.

Down the road though, Michigan football has an exciting quarterback in the fold in Smith, who can give them everything they want at the position. The focus now is just getting to signing day, because like I said, his stock could rise this fall.
