Last month, the 2023 Michigan football transfer portal class gained a valuable member: former UMass captain Josh Wallace. Wallace, a long-time standout for the Minutemen and the newest addition to the Wolverines’ incredible transfer portal class, is expected to come in and compete for a starting role opposite Will Johnson this fall.

This year’s Michigan football roster has few concerns, though one of the glaring ones was cornerback depth. Since the 2022 season came to an end, Jim Harbaugh has been actively pursuing transfers to maintain the most competitive roster in the Big Ten conference. That remained true last month as the Maize and Blue added Josh Wallace to address their cornerback issues.

During Michigan’s spring game, the general belief was that newly converted cornerback Amorion Walker, who was once a three-star wide receiver for the Wolverines, was the frontrunner to earn a starting role opposite Will Johnson, the clear-cut CB1 for the Wolverines. However, with the addition of Josh Wallace, a heated position battle may ensue for the CB2 role this summer.

In his most recent season with UMass, Josh Wallace stood out as one of the best Independent cornerbacks in all of college football. He appeared in all 12 games for the Minutemen last year, recording 41 tackles, two interceptions, eight pass breakups, and one fumble recovery. As a team captain, he earned All-Independent honors for his impressive performance, providing excellent coverage for the Minutemen before entering the transfer portal and committing to Michigan football.

Heading into the 2023 college football season, keep an eye on the competition between Josh Wallace and Amorion Walker as they battle for a starting role at cornerback. The Michigan football program aims to secure a third-straight Big Ten title and a College Football Playoff appearance, and to do so, the Wolverines need this new transfer addition to step up and compete at the highest level in the sport.
