Last night, Michigan football landed a massive commitment from 4-star defensive end Ted Hammond. Hammond — an Ohio native — brings Michigan’s class to five total prospects and No. 10 in the Rivals Network team recruiting rankings.

Michigan football ranks second in the Big Ten

I am confident that I don’t need to remind Michigan fans of this, but the Wolverines are being out-recruited by the Ohio State Buckeyes… again. This is nothing new for Michigan football; frankly, it does not matter that much.

Ohio State has been the better team on paper over the past two years, yet Michigan holds 15+ point victories in both games. That said, the gap between Michigan and Ohio State in the 2024 standings is less comprehensive than you’d think.

Currently, the Wolverines’ class ranks 10th in the country, while the Buckeyes’ class ranks 6th. Michigan has landed five prospects in the 2024 cycle — four of which are 4-stars — while Ohio State has landed three. Additionally, two of Michigan’s five commits are from Ohio, and zero are from Michigan.

Many Big Ten teams rank top-20

Right on Michigan’s tail are two more Big Ten teams: Iowa (11th) and Michigan State (13th). Penn State is the only other Big Ten team with a top-20 2024 class right now, with the 20th-ranked class nationally.

Thus far, according to Rivals, Michigan football has accumulated 428 recruiting points — this is 37 fewer than the 9th-ranked team in the recruiting rankings (Texas Tech). It is still early in the cycle, but Michigan has been pulling some solid talent thus far, which is essential if the Wolverines want to stay in contention for the Big Ten and beyond.
