ANN ARBOR, MI — Over the weekend, the Michigan Wolverines swept the Wisconsin Badgers in a two-game series at Yost Ice Arena. Michigan’s victories send them to the second round of the NCAA tournament to face off against the Ohio State Buckeyes, who just defeated Penn State in a three-game series in Columbus. The Wolverines are 1-2-1 against Ohio State this season — OSU “won” the one tie via shootout, though the contest still counts as a draw.

Now that we’re into the second round of the Big Ten hockey tournament, there will be no more multi-game series to be played. Now, the Wolverines are in single-game elimination mode as they enter the final stages of Big Ten play.

Since Michigan is the higher seed, the Wolverines will get the chance to host Ohio State in the second round. If all goes as it did a year ago, Michigan hockey could be well on its way to a Big Ten title and Frozen Four berth once again just a season later under a first year head coach.

The winner of the Michigan-Ohio State matchup this week will face the winner of the Michigan State-Minnesota matchup in Minneapolis for the Big Ten tournament title. After winning its first-ever Big Ten playoff series, the Michigan State Spartans will face off against No. 1 Minnesota will massive implications on the line. For Michigan hockey, it’s just another semifinal matchup that could lead to a conference championship and more heading into the NCAA tournament later this month.
