2025 might end up as the best recruiting class in recent memory

Last week Michigan football turned a good recruiting class into one of the best in the country. The Wolverines were able to flip five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood from LSU, and the narrative around the future of the program completely changed.

Michigan RB Commit Donovan Johnson on Recruiting

Players already committed to Michigan were understandably excited about the news. EJ Holland of On3 reported ($) 2025 four-star running back Donovan Johnson (IMG Academy, Bradenton, FL) expects more recruits to hop on the bandwagon soon.

“Getting Bryce (Underwood) was big,” Johnson said. “He pulled that trigger. It’s on now. We’re definitely working on getting some other guys. We’re going to have a lot of flips in the next few weeks. You’re going to see. We’re on a roll.”

Johnson was on his official visit last weekend as Michigan took apart Northwestern, and he raved about the environment in Ann Arbor.

“It was tremendous,” Johnson said. “Every time I go up to Michigan, they have a great atmosphere. Just to walk through the tunnel and see the fans and the energy they have is great. Talking to Coach (Sherrone) Moore and Coach Tony (Alford), it’s just so surreal with the deadline getting closer. It’s going to be fun. I got to go out with the players and form more connections. I’m a brotherhood type of person. That’s something we hold dearly at IMG. It meant a lot to me to meet up with them. It was a lot of fun.”

Johnson said head coach Sherrone Moore and running backs coach Tony Alford have established a connection with him.

“Those are my guys,” Johnson said. “They told me to prepare myself. Each day, it’s getting closer and closer. I love their attitude and demeanor. They are very honest. I like their communication. A lot of coaches don’t have that communication with their players. They are down to earth. They want to grind. I love that they talk to you as a player and as a man.”

Michigan is pursuing a teammate of Johnson’s in four-star linebacker Nathaniel Owusu-Boateng. On3’s recruiting prediction machine gives the Wolverines a 13.5% chance to land Owusu-Boateng behind Florida (18.4%) and Notre Dame (29.9%). Johnson said he’s working to make it happen.

“I’m working on him every day,” Johnson said. “We’re brothers for real. Wu knows where home is at. We already had deep discussions about that. We talk about the coaching staff, the system and things of that nature.”

As far as what Johnson hopes to accomplish at Michigan, he seems to have his football priorities straight.

“I want to win a national championship, beat Ohio State and beat Michigan State,” Johnson said. “I want to be a sponge. I want to learn from the older guys but also be a leader. I want to get this work in.”
