Michigan women’s basketball on two-game win streak with 82-69 win over Washington

The Wolverines are headed in the right direction

Michigan women’s basketball (12-5, 3-3 Big Ten) has scored over 80 points in back-to-back games for the first time since November after beating the Huskies 82-69 Wednesday night. Michigan’s bench scored 24 points on 12-of-16 (75%) shooting, and Washington’s bench was limited to just two points.

It’s the second win in a row for the Wolverines since dropping three straight conference games to No. 4 USC, No. 1 UCLA and No. 9 Ohio State, respectively.

Michigan guards lead the way in win over Washington

Washington (12-6, 3-3 Big Ten) guard Sayvia Sellers scored nearly half of her teams’ points and tied a career-high (30) while shooting 10-of-12 from the field. Aside from Sellers’ big night, Michigan’s guards stole the show.

The Wolverines trailed for a total of 27 seconds Wednesday night, and it was by no more than two points early in the first quarter. Senior Michigan guard Jordan Hobbs outscored Washington’s entire team in the opening quarter, 10-7. Hobbs finished with 22 points, including four three pointers on seven attempts (57%), four rebounds and three assists. 

Freshman guard Olivia Olson posted 18 points (7-of-13), five rebounds and three assists. Olson has been arguably the most consistent player for the Wolverines this season. Although Syla Swords had an off night in terms of scoring (seven points, 3-of-10), she put up a game-high eight rebounds. 

Center Yulia Grabovskaia also had a productive night, as she finished with ten points (5-of-7), three rebounds, one assist, two steals and a block in 13 minutes. 

Michigan is set to host last place Rutgers (8-10, 0-7 Big Ten) next on Jan. 18 before a matchup with No. 24 Minnesota (16-2, 4-2 Big Ten) on Jan. 22.
