Jim Harbaugh has made his Michigan football transfer portal strategy pretty clear with the 2022 and 2023 classes: reload and continue to contend. While the Wolverines (13-0, Big Ten Champions) are still in the running for the national title, and are about to face Alabama in the College Football Playoff, Michigan has a new portal target, and it’s a notable one. Upton Stout out of Western Kentucky, the No. 1 safety in the portal right now, has been offered by the Maize and Blue.

There is reason to believe that Michigan football won’t get too much work in the transfer portal until January. Why? Well, alongside three other teams (Alabama, Texas, and Washington), Michigan is in the College Football Playoff and still gunning for the national title this seaosn.

That said, the 2023 season will eventually end, and it’s clear that Jim Harbaugh and his coaching staff know that the transfer portal will be a major asset if they are to continue to contend for Big Ten titles and more. After winning a third straight conference championship, downing No. 16 Iowa 26-0, Michigan offered their latest portal target: Upton Stout, a major safety out of Western Kentucky.

Western Kentucky transfer Upton Stout is the No. 1 safety in the portal

Per the transfer portal rankings, Stout is a top 40 transfer prospect and is the No. 1 safety in the portal right now. He was a 2022 All-Conference and Freshman All-American honorable mention, a 2023 preseason first-team All-Conference selection, and more during his few seasons with Western Kentucky, though is now in search of a new home.

On top of being offered by Michigan football, Stout has earned transfer offers from Ole Miss, Boston College, USC, Pitt, West Virginia, and more. With the 2024 offseason approaching, Stout is the latest portal offer for the Wolverines — though he is far from Jim Harbaugh’s last.
