Jim Harbaugh likes to move players around to best fit the team’s needs, which has been the case for quite some time, and can currently be seen with players like Mike Sainristil and Amorion Walker — both of whom were once wide receivers yet currently play cornerback. On Monday, it was confirmed that Reece Atteberry, a Michigan Wolverines football veteran who has seen action along the offensive line, has been moved around a bit throughout fall camp and is currently taking reps on the defensive side of the football. This appears to be the latest fall camp position change for the Maize and Blue.

Michigan Wolverines football position change for Reece Atteberry

Reece Atteberry, a three-year letterman in the Maize and Blue and a former Academic All-Big Ten honoree, has been with the Wolverines for three seasons now; so far, he has solely been along Michigan’s offensive line. That said, yesterday, defensive tackle Kenneth Grant confirmed that Atteberry was moved into the defensive line room about a week ago, and has been taking snaps at defensive tackle every since.

“He came in the room, what? Like a week ago? He’s doing really good,” Kenneth Grant, a rising star defensive lineman, said yesterday. “I think he said he played D-line in high school, but he’s already moving up on the depth chart. He’s doing really, really good.”

This year’s Michigan football offensive line is loaded — more so than the Wolverines have ever seen before, which is saying something, considering that Michigan Wolverines football has won a pair of Joe Moore Awards this decade. With limited opportunity on offense, how has Reece Atteberry been transitioning over to the defensive side of the football?

“Just learning — he’s very smart in the meeting room. He knows the concept of the defense and how to run the defense; he just has to work on just the little things, technique-wise.”

Here are a few shots from fall camp in Ann Arbor — in the first photo, you can see Atteberry getting some reps in as a defensive tackle:

Come Week 1, watch out for Reece Atteberry to appear at defensive tackle — Michigan football is deep along the D-line right now, but Atteberry’s impressive 6-foot-5, 309-pound frame could be a valuable asset for Jesse Minter’s defense this fall.
