On Thursday, Michigan basketball (10-7 overall, 4-2 Big Ten) will take a tripe to College Park, MA to face the Maryland Terrapins (11-6 overall, 2-4 Big Ten) in a crucial road game for the Wolverines. Michigan seems to be in a “win two, lose two” cycle right now, and ideally that will at least remain the case through this week as U-M currently is on a one-game winning streak.

Previewing Maryland basketball

As Michigan and Maryland gear up to face off tomorrow night, here is what you need to know about the Terrapins’ season thus far.

Maryland’s schedule so far

After starting the season with a perfect 8-0 record, Maryland’s season has taken a turn for the worse. The Terps have lost six of their past nine, with its only three wins coming against St. Peter’s, UMBC, and Ohio State. Additionally, Maryland is coming off of a road loss at Iowa as they enter Thursday night’s contest. The Terps have one ranked win: vs. No. 24 Ohio State.

The Terrapins are 2-4 in Big Ten play (10th in conference standings) and sit 3.5 games back in the Big Ten Championship race. Unlike Michigan basketball, the Terps no longer control their own destiny and will need some help in catching up.

Maryland on the stat sheet

So far in 2022-23, Maryland averages 71.5 points-per-game (200th nationally), 35.8 rebounds-per-game (197th nationally), 10.6 assists-per-game (442nd nationally) and 64.9 points allowed-per-game. Maryland’s leader in points-per-game (PPG), assists-per-game (APG), and field goal percentage (FG %) is senior guard (and first-year transfer) Jahmir Young.

Young averages 15.2 PPG, 2.8 APG, and is shooting 42.4 percent from the floor this season. Additionally, Young is shooting 29.2 percent from beyond the arc, and 79.5 percent from the charity stripe. If Michigan basketball wants to stop Maryland, they’ll need to lock down Jahmir Young.

Chance of victory, how to watch Michigan basketball vs. Maryland

Right now, ESPN analytics give the Wolverines a 21.9 percent chance of victory on Thursday; it’s important to remember that the first time Michigan and Maryland met (on January 1st) the Wolverines won, 81-46, in Ann Arbor.
