Last Friday, the University of Michigan fired the football team’s co-offensive coordinator, Matt Weiss, amidst a university-led investigation into alleged computer access crimes.

Michigan fires OC Matt Weiss

This was a shock to everyone when the story first broke, and brought with it a whirlwind of questions surrounding what exactly transpired. Now, lingering questions remain about how this will impact the team on the field next season, as Weiss was heading into his second season as co-coordinator and third season as quarterbacks coach.

There is also a good chance that could have an effect on recruiting seeing as Weiss was the primary recruiter for 2024 5-star quarterback prospect Jadyn Davis. Now, questions arise over where he stands in his possible recruitment to Ann Arbor — a week ago, Davis was projected by many inside sources to commit to Michigan football.

Davis, the number 2 ranked quarterback of the 2024 class per 247sports, has been high on Michigan for awhile now, and even has five crystal balls currently to end up in the Maize and Blue.

After four visits to Michigan, many expected a commitment until the senior from Charlotte North Carolina pushed his commitment date back last month. Now, many other schools have been making a bigger push for Davis; including Clemson, and most recently, Ohio State.

What it means for Michigan’s chances

You would think that the firing of Matt Weiss would have at least some sort of impact of Davis’ decision, how much is yet to be seen. Regardless, it’s imperative that the Wolverines hire a new quarterbacks coach quickly that can step in to start building a relationship immediately. Luckily, Michigan football returns the rest of its offensive staff, including co-offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore and most importantly head coach Jim Harbaugh.

Michigan also visited No. 1 overall recruit, Dylan Raiola, from Chandler, Arizona last week. It appears that he left them out of his new top-4 after decommitting from the Buckeyes back in December.

Michigan took no true freshman quarterback in the 2023 class after the coaching staff went all-in on in-state, Martin Luther King High senior Dante Moore, who recently committed to UCLA. Now, it’s a necessity that the Wolverines land a quarterback in the 2024 cycle. That decision left the Wolverines out of luck when they couldn’t secure a commitment from Moore, putting all their eggs into Davis’ basket could yield similar results this time around.
