Monday marked the beginning of the first week of Michigan basketball’s offseason, and its roster is undergoing immediate changes. Sophomore forward Sam Walters is reportedly entering the transfer portal, joining guards Jace Howard and Justin Pippen in leaving the Wolverines.

Walters spent his freshman season at Alabama before making the move to Ann Arbor and will have two seasons of eligibility remaining.

Walters has never started a game and averages 12.5 minutes off the bench in his career. Listed at 6-foot-10, 200 pounds, Walters is most effective as a three-point shooter. He shot 39.4 percent from deep range at Alabama, and 36.6 percent for the Wolverines.

Walters missed the final seven weeks of the season with a back injury, last seeing the floor against Indiana on Feb. 8. After playing at least ten minutes in each of the first seven games, Walters’ playing time decreased once the conference schedule began.

Coming out of high school (Villages Charter, The Villages, FL), Walters was a four-star recruit and the No. 8 player in Florida according to 247Sports. His departure could make the Wolverines more urgent in the forward market, as they’ve mostly shown interest in guards at this point in the portal window.
