When considering college athletes and concerns outside of their sport, it might be easy to think of things such as academics or social media. However, one of the more underrated aspects of student-athletes’ lives might be something as simple as finding clothes that fit correctly. That is precisely where companies such as State & Liberty come into play.

Mission

State & Liberty is a company that sells men’s clothing, specifically dress clothes that cater to athletes. Co-founders Steven Fisher and Lee Moffie aimed to create a line of clothing that would give athletes easier access to nice clothing that fit well without breaking the bank to get a custom fit.

When speaking to co-founder Lee Moffie, he explained that they weren’t in it for the money but more to create an excellent product for the athletes of the world.

“I would say that sales to us is just a scoreboard,” Moffie explained. “I think that our mission, and there’s no grand mission to be the greatest menswear company ever. Our mission is just to keep introducing people to the brand, keep providing them a great product, keep providing them a great experience, and that’s kind of our goal.”

For anyone who’s ever played a sport, there’s nothing worse than a lack of mobility, and this was one of the main points of emphasis for State & Liberty. Their website describes their clothing as providing a “ridiculous amount of stretch.” This increase in mobility and comfortability is critical for any athlete, whether on or off the field.

It’s always challenging to find a perfect-fitting shirt as an athlete. Most “slim fit” designed dress shirts are too tight, while the “standard fit” has a much boxier feel to it. What State & Liberty hope to do is create a shirt that matches up with a more “v-shape” body type to cater to the broad shoulders and narrow hips that many athletes have.

Working with the University of Michigan

As Fisher and Moffie attended the University of Michigan, they’ve emphasized their hope to continue working with the student-athletes attending the University. Over the years, they’ve been able to work with teams such as wrestling, hockey, and football.

Working with big names such as Jake Moody and Blake Corum, it’s apparent it is important for State & Liberty to help out with Michigan athletics and the student-athletes who attend the school.

Moffie also mentioned they’ve worked with former Michigan football All-American Aidan Hutchinson over the last couple of years.

“We did Aidan Hutchinson’s tux for his Heisman (ceremony) last year, and we continue to. If you look at his Instagram, he’s wearing our suits going into the games on Sundays.”

He also emphasized how thankful he is to the University of Michigan and the hockey community for their help in building the State & Liberty brand.

“I would say that we’ve been extremely fortunate once we started the business to have both the Michigan family and the hockey family as really strong supporters.” Moffie said. “Especially in the early days, to really get the brand out there.”
