Last weekend, Michigan football quarterback JJ McCarthy showed incredible poise and elite talent, completing 26 of his 30 passes for 280 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. McCarthy was the highest-graded QB in the Big Ten conference, broke a program record for completion percentage in a game (min. 30 throws), and more en route to a 30-3 season-opening victory over ECU. Here is the latest buzz surrounding the Wolverines’ junior QB, according to sophomore tight end Colston Loveland.

Michigan football quarterback continues to impress

Yesterday, for the first time since the Wolverines knocked off East Carolina last weekend, tight end Colston Loveland met with the media to talk all things Michigan football. On Saturday, Loveland had himself an impressive game alongside JJ McCarthy and a few other receivers — he caught four passes for 57 yards (14.3 average) in the win over ECU.

On Tuesday, the sophomore star gave us the latest buzz on Michigan football quarterback JJ McCarthy, who is one of the most talked about players in college football right now.

“He was just poised,” Colston Loveland said of his junior quarterback. “(He) seemed like he was poised, very comfortable back there — and that’s a big shout-out to our offensive line, first off, giving him much time in the pocket. But yeah, he’s a great quarterback, and the improvement from last year — I mean, he was a great quarterback last year… It’s just amazing to see. Just got to keep rolling.”

JJ McCarthy carrying confidence over from fall camp and more

Loveland was also asked if he saw this poise and confidence throughout fall camp as well. According to Loveland, JJ McCarthy has been shining for Michigan football since long before the fans got their first glimpse of it on the field last weekend.

“Yeah, for sure,” Loveland continued. “That was a long month of — there’s a lot of ups and downs at camp, a lot of getting better, and that’s where it’s good to make your mistakes in camp. I think that this first game showed he was really working all camp and really fine-tuning every aspect of his game.”

More from Colston Loveland on the passing game

Additionally, as far as Colston Loveland is concerned, he is more than happy that Michigan football is opting to air it out more. Usually, the Wolverines are more run-oriented, though ECU’s defense gave the passing attack room to shine, and that it did.

“I’m all for it (an increased passing attack),” Loveland said. “I think all the tight ends and receivers are for it. As we all know, we’ve got to run the ball too. And that’s a lot of our identity. So it’s nice to see a balance for sure.”
