Michigan basketball head coach Dusty May has said that the Wolverines want to fill their final scholarship spot for the 2024-25 season, either with a transfer or a freshman who can develop for the future.

The Wolverines were in the mix for Jamir Watkins. The Florida State forward eventually went back to the Seminoles. He would have been a perfect fit but sometimes things don’t work out.

There’s still time to make an addition, even though players have arrived for summer workouts. One player on the radar after re-opening his recruitment is Jayhlon Young who is “considering’ Michigan basketball among others according to The Athletic‘s Tobias Bass.

Thoughts on transfer target considering Michigan basketball

It’s not entirely clear if Michigan basketball has offered Young. He might be more interested in the Wolverines but the former Memphis and UCF could bring some attractive qualities to the roster as a veteran guard.

Two years ago, Young started 12 games for UCF. He averaged 4.5 points per game, shot 35 percent from 3-point range, and averaged two assists per game, which fits into what Dusty May wants to do. He wants multiple creators and shooters on the floor at the same time.

Young could serve as a combo guard type for Michigan. He averaged at least 0.7 steals per game in the past two seasons and had a defensive point-per-possession rating of 1.0 the past two seasons.

The 6-foot-2 guard is also considering a return to Memphis along with Ohio State and Fresno State, He played 27 games for the Tigers last season. Whether he has multiple years of eligibility left could also be a consideration. At this point, adding a player like Young for one year isn’t much of a risk.

Unless Young gets on campus for a visit to the Michigan basketball program, I wouldn’t consider it too serious, but it’s another transfer connected to the Wolverines, for now.
