Man, it feels good to beat Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish have won plenty of recruiting battles over Michigan football in recent cycles but the Wolverines got some payback on Monday, flipping the top-rated recruit for the Irish in 2025 — Ivan Taylor.
The four-star safety who is 6-foot, 180 pounds out of Winter Garden, Florida is the son of former Pro Bowl cornerback Ike Taylor. He’s ranked No. 54 overall and is the third top-100 commitment of the 2025 class for Michigan football and here are three quick takeaways on his pledge to Michigan football.
The 2025 class is starting to look elite
There has been plenty of criticism thrown at Michigan football for its 2025 class, but as we hit July, things are starting to look up. Not only did the Wolverines land Taylor on Monday, they are going to get Andrew Olesh.
That’s a done deal. It has been since the weekend. That was one of Sherrone Moore’s tweets. Taylor was the other, which means more good news will follow with Phillip Wright.
But the Wolverines have 14 commitments (soon to be 15) and there will be 12 four-star pledges in that group according to the 247 Sports composite rankings. There are also four in the top 121 and five in the top 160.
There is still work to do and Michigan may never recruit as well as Alabama, Ohio State, and Georgia — according to the rankings — but if they can land top-100 recruits at this clip, it’s more than enough to win with.
Lamar Morgan is a star
Not long ago, we were singing the praises of Lou Esposito after another four-star commitment, but another new assistant hired by Sherrone Moore — Lamar Morgan — is absolutely killing it.
Michigan football has three top-100 commitments in the 2025 class. That’s more than the previous two classes combined. Morgan has won more top-100 commitments in his short time on staff than the previous staff did in two cycles.
There were other factors involved, but still, that’s impressive work. Brian Jean-Mary is a solid recruiter too and Wink Martindale has also been a pleasant surprise.
We’ll see how these coaches do in terms of development, but Sherrone Moore hired some DAWGS on the recruiting trail.
An elite DB addition
Even during the lower-rated classes, Michigan has excelled in recruiting the secondary. They landed top-200 commitments in the past two cycles and they might have as good a safety pairing as anyone in college football in terms of 2025 commitments with two of the top 10.
Taylor will be a perfect fit for Michigan football though. He’s got great speed, can cover well enough to play cornerback, and is a great tackler. He’s got all the genes too and it wouldn’t be surprising at all if he was a first-round pick three years from now.
