Michigan women’s basketball (18-7, 9-5 Big Ten) took down visiting Indiana 70-67 Wednesday night, but it meant more than another notch in the win column. Head coach Kim Barnes Arico passed John Beilein as the winningest coach in program history with victory No. 279.

“Congratulations to Kim Barnes Arico on becoming the winningest basketball coach in UM history,” Beilein shared on Twitter/X Thursday. “She just wins and does so with class, hard work, great culture and fabulous student athletes! She can also really coach!

Barnes Arico’s all-time record sits at 279-140. She led the Wolverines to a WNIT championship in 2017 and has been to the last six NCAA tournaments.

Michigan is on a four-game winning streak with four contests left in the regular season. Led by a group of star freshmen, the Wolverines are 12-2 in their last 14 games, and they couldn’t ask for a much better time to be playing their best.

“This team … it makes me smile,” Barnes Arico told Tony Paul of the Detroit News after the game Wednesday. “I just try to embrace the wonderful women that we have in our program and the pleasure that I get being around them every day.”

Michigan is set for a road test against No. 17 Maryland next on Feb. 17.
