Michigan men’s basketball is set to welcome the best high school player in the state for the second year in a row. Future Wolverines guard Trey McKenney (Orchard Lake St. Mary’s Prep, Orchard Lake) was named Mr. Basketball for the state of Michigan Monday, one year after current freshman Phat Phat Brooks (Grand Rapids Catholic Central High, Grand Rapids) took the honor.
Michigan signee Trey McKenney wins Mr. Basketball award
McKenney was arguably the best player in the mitten as a junior in 2024, but the award is only given to seniors. The Flint native was selected as a McDonald’s All-American in January, and he became his school’s all-time leader in points this season as he nears 2,000.
McKenney was Team USA’s second-leading scorer (10.8 ppg) at the 2024 FIBA U18 Americup en route to a gold medal. As a junior at OLSM, McKenney led the Eaglets to an MHSAA Division I state title, averaging over 20 points and 10 rebounds on the season.
As a senior, McKenney is averaging 22.9 points, 10.5 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game. On Jan. 9, McKenney scored 37 points against Florida’s IMG Academy. OLSM is in the quarterfinals of the state tournament and are three wins away from a second-straight state championship.
The semifinals and finals are held at the Breslin Center in East Lansing, so McKenney already has a few games under his belt at the home of his future rival.
