Defensive backs TJ and Tevis Metcalf transferred from Arkansas to Michigan in the offseason. TJ is heading into his junior season after a strong two years with the Razorbacks, accumulating 71 tackles, three interceptions and ten pass breakups. Tevis spent most of his freshman season playing on special teams but has three seasons of eligibility to develop.
Metcalf brothers want to ‘do their part’ at Michigan
The defensive backs are cousins with NFL wide receiver and former Ole Miss standout DK Metcalf. TJ could be in the starting rotation this fall, while Tevis will likely be a depth player as a sophomore. Michigan defensive pass game coordinator and defensive backs coach LaMar Morgan said the Metcalfs’ discipline comes from their family.
“… Those kids are focused man, they’re here all the time. In between class they’ll eat breakfast, they wanna watch tape on their own, you might walk by the meeting room and they’re just in there watching tape, very critical of themselves,” Morgan said of the Metcalf brothers. “I just think they have a maturity about them, I think that comes from mom and dad. They love football. The pedigree of that family with DK in that family, they’re just really appreciative of being at Michigan.
“The way that we do things, the detail, the focus on winning championships, I just think they wanna do their part to help us get there. But those kids have a bright future and I’m really excited to see both of those guys. Every practice, one or both of them are going to make a play and it’s just like, ‘oh that’s just the Metcalf boys again,’ so I think that’s really cool to see.”
TJ is listed at 6-foot-1, 200 pounds, and fits the bill of a starting Big Ten cornerback. Tevis stands at 5-foot-10, 192 pounds, and could turn into nickel or safety.
Both TJ and Tevis were three-star recruits coming out of high school. Their father, Tarrus Metcalf, played college football at Mississippi.
