The Michigan men’s tennis season came to a close after their NCAA tournament loss to Cornell in round one. Cornell won the doubles point, winning two of the three courts against the Wolverines, and won the first set in five of the six singles matchups, leading to their ultimate 4-0 win over Michigan.

Though Cornell won two of three doubles matches, Michigan seniors Will Cooksey and Patorn Hanchaikul did win their doubles match, closing out their time at Michigan on a relative high note. Additionally, Hanchaikul was the only Wolverine to win the first set of his singles match, and tied in the second set—it was during the second set tiebreaker that the match was halted.

The Wolverines Have a Lot to Be Proud of This Season, Time to Pivot to Next Season

Though they fell in the tournament, the Wolverines ended their season with a winning record of 15-13. They made it to the quarterfinals of the Big Ten conference tournament, where they lost to UCLA, who eventually went on to win the tournament. Their regular season performance, coupled with their Big Ten tournament performance, led the Wolverines to their ninth straight NCAA tournament appearance.

All things considered, head coach Sean Maymi and his tennis squad had a fairly successful season, with quite a bit to be proud of, their highest ranking of the season coming in at #12 the week of February 20th. Though Maymi is losing some great players in Cooksey, Hanchaikul, and Gavin Young, returning next season are some real playmakers in Alex Cairo, Bjorn Swenson, and Benjamin Kittay, whose highest singles ranking was 55 this season.
