After two tough losses in Pool B of the Big Ten tournament, Michigan baseball patiently awaits the NCAA tournament selection show to know whether their season has come to a close. The Wolverines lost to Illinois in game one of the tournament, in a ten inning heartbreaker which ended 6-5, Illinois. Though they were still set to play UCLA, the loss to Illinois prevented Michigan from moving onto the tournament semifinals.
The Wolverines went into game seven of the tournament against No. two seed UCLA with their heads held high, ready to work to pad their resume in a big and much needed way. Though they came up short against the 13th nationally ranked Bruins, 7-5, they put up a good fight, heading into the bottom of the eighth with a 5-4 lead. UCLA put up three runs in the eighth, however, and left the Wolverines scoreless at the top of the ninth, ending the game and, potentially, the Wolverines’ season.
Michigan is on the Cusp When it Comes to the NCAA Tournament
Currently at 33-23, Michigan is sitting pretty decidedly on the bubble of the NCAA tournament. If they do make it into the pool of 64, it’s more than likely that they’ll be among the last four in. The Wolverines have a decent resume, and one could easily make the argument that on top of their valiant efforts in their two most recent losses, their three game sweeps over rivals Ohio State and Michigan State, as well as some solid wins scattered throughout the season, that they absolutely deserve a bid.
Though the whole roster is most definitely hoping for a tournament bid, missing out on the tournament would mean the end of the collegiate careers for a handful of graduating Wolverines. Cole Caruso, Benny Casillas, Jeter Ybarra, and Matt Spear are all massive playmakers in their final season at Michigan, and their absence next year will certainly be felt.
The selection show takes place Monday, May 26th, with the Wolverines holding out hope that their season isn’t quite over yet.
