A new target emerges for Michigan football in transfer portal

Michigan football fans should know better than anyone that you can never have enough quality players in the trenches. Offensive linemen are weapons as Jim Harbaugh said recently. D-linemen are too.

Those two position groups, as much as anything else, are why Michigan football won the 2023 national championship. Blake Corum, J.J. McCarthy, and Mike Sainristil — three generational players — also had a huge role, as did many others.

But Michigan football turned the tables on Ohio State by owning the trenches. Going into the 2024 season, the defensive line is loaded. There are depth concerns after Mason Graham, Kenneth Grant, and Rayshaun Benny, especially because Benny is coming off an injury.

That’s why Jay’viar Suggs is such an important target. It feels like a Michigan-LSU battle at this point, but according to Pete Nakos of On3.com, Michigan football is in touch with an offensive line transfer too.

Michigan football trying to solidify the O-line too

The player in question is former Buffalo offensive lineman Isaiah Wright. The 6-foot-4, 300-pounder is expected to visit soon. He’s also gotten interest from Maryland and Rutgers.

Wright started last season playing left tackle but switched to center after five starts. He’s started 24 games (19 at tackle) in two seasons for the Bulls after transferring from Rutgers.

Wright has allowed just four sacks in the past two seasons and while the Wolverines don’t need a center, they could use depth at offensive tackle. Andrew Gentry and Jeff Persi are battling it out for the starting job opposite of Myles Hinton.

Hinton still has plenty to prove in his own right. But adding another guy like Wright would bring depth, experience, and competition to a key position group. So keep an eye on him as well as other key targets like Jaden Mangham and Suggs.
