Another sign that Michigan football recruiting is just fine

Rivals have been ripping the recruiting of Michigan football but the truth is, the Wolverines are doing just fine.

Michigan football continues to build a really solid 2025 recruiting class, which is the first for head coach Sherrone Moore.

The Wolverines might not be landing as many elite recruits as Ohio State, but truth be told, the Buckeyes have usually recruited better. At least historically.

That hasn’t stopped Michigan from having some great runs in the series and as the past three seasons have shown, winning games is about a lot more than recruiting rankings.

Michigan football is building a strong recruiting class in 2025

Yet, even the rankings are showing a better picture for Michigan football, especially after landing the second top-100 commitment of the 2025 class this week in Kainoa Winston.

U-M has the No. 40 recruiting class right now according to the 247 Sports team rankings but most of the teams ranked ahead of Michigan have double-digit commitments. Only Missouri and Oregon are ranked ahead of Michigan in the recruiting rankings and have single digits in terms of 2025 commitments.

Rutgers is ranked ahead of Michigan but has something like 24 commitments. Five of those are four-star recruits and the the rest are three stars. The Scarlet Knights are ranked 10th right now, which is a reminder that recruiting rankings in June don’t mean much.

Michigan football was ranked around No. 1 at one point in the 2024 class. That was never going to hold, just like it wasn’t going to for Notre Dame a couple of years ago.

Michigan is doing well with blue-chip prospects

In terms of blue-chip prospects in 2025, U-M has seven committed already. Only 10 programs have more.

The Wolverines are ranked seventh according to the 247 Sports team rankings in terms of average ranking per commitment. Considering that Jim Harbaugh made his decision late, and then took most of the coaching staff with him, it’s pretty impressive that Sherrone Moore has Michigan recruiting as well as it is.

He’s added some big-time staff members and bolstered the staff, including stealing a recruiting staff member away from Ohio State. Once the Wolverines start to add more commitments, their blue-chip ratio, which is 100 percent will drop. The average rating per commitment will probably drop too, but the overall ranking will rise too and so far, the 2025 class is shaping up to be really strong.
