After turning around a 5-7 team in 2015, Michigan football coach Jim Harbaugh has seen his ups and downs with the Wolverines. Over the past 2.5 seasons, however, the 9th-year head coach is 33-3 overall with a pair of Big Ten titles, CFP appearances, and more to show for it. Despite being in the midst of a scandal right now, it was reported today that the University of Michigan is working to finalize a contract extension for Harbaugh that will make him the highest-paid head coach in the Big Ten Conference.
Major news for Michigan football coach Jim Harbaugh
Reports began surfacing on Tuesday that the University of Michigan had met with the NCAA to discuss the evidence found from the investigation into Connor Stalions and the Wolverines’ alleged sign-stealing scandal. Now, heading into Week 10, it is widely believed that the school has had a chance to look over the facts of the case and weigh its options going forward, prompting the regents and second-year school president Santa Ono to take the contract extension talks off hold and start working on keeping Jim Harbaugh in Ann Arbor for the foreseeable future.
Per a brand new report from famed Michigan author John U. Bacon, the school and its administration are now working to finalize the deal that was on the table earlier this month — one which will make Michigan football coach Jim Harbaugh the highest-paid coach in the Big Ten Conference if signed.
“University of Michigan President Ono, AD Manuel, and Regents are currently working to finalize Harbaugh’s contract, which will make him the highest paid coach in (the Big Ten),” Bacon’s tweet reads. “One sent me this: ‘While UM officials remain concerned about the investigation, long term they believe Harbaugh’s overwhelming success at his main missions of winning games and graduating student-athletes has earned him the right to be the highest paid coach in the conference.'”
Per earlier reports from TheWolverine.com, it is expected that this new contract will have language that allows the school to opt-out or renegotiate the terms depending on the results of the ongoing NCAA investigations into the Wolverines’ program.
Regardless, this is massive news for Jim Harbaugh and the Michigan football program despite all of the negative buzz surrounding the team right now.
