Going from the FCS to the winningest program in college football could be too much of a leap for some. For Cal Poly offensive tackle transfer Brady Norton, all signs point toward him being ready for the big stage, and the Big House. Ranked as a three-star portal player, Norton has three seasons of eligibility left as he redshirted as a freshman.

Grant Newsome shares insight on Brady Norton

Whether it’s because of eligibility or the portal, Michigan lost several offensive lineman following the 2024 season. The Wolverines brought in the No. 1 recruit in the country to play quarterback in Bryce Underwood, so the trenches were undoubtedly a focus. Listed at 6-foot-3, 275 pounds, Norton has experience playing tackle on both sides of the line, but he could be plugged in at guard as well.

Michigan offensive line coach Grant Newsome said Norton adapted to the competition quickly.

“Brady’s been a great addition. Very smart. Loves ball,” Newsome said. “Obviously has some good experience. Although it was at a lower level, you haven’t seen any of that kind of struggle that you, not worry about, but you wonder like hey is this gonna be a little too fast for him? Everyone is a lot bigger, stronger, faster, (but) you haven’t seen that at all.

“He’s doing really well and he’s another guy that’s putting himself in that mix to be one of those best five, so it’s been awesome to see that from him.”

The Wolverines also added Ferris State (D2) offensive lineman Lawrence Hattar from the transfer portal. Hattar was a D2Football first team All-American guard for the Bulldogs as they’ve won three national championships in the last four years. Hattar will have one season of eligibility remaining.

When fans gather for Michigan’s spring football game on April 19, the offensive line should be one of the most-watched position groups.
