In the first College Football Playoff rankings of the 2023 season, Jim Harbaugh and his Wolverines are ranked at No. 3 nationally, only behind Georgia (2) and Ohio State (1). Despite the ongoing NCAA investigation into the Michigan football scandal, CFP committee chair Boo Corrigan doesn’t think that the investigations or scandal have much to do with the playoff.

CFP committee chair comments on Michigan football scandal

Like it or not, Michigan football is ranked at No. 3 in the nation in this year’s initial College Football Playoff poll, which was just officially released. Following the rankings’ 2023 debut, CFP committee chair Boo Corrigan had this to say about the scandal and investigation into alleged illegal sign-stealing, which has taken the national sports media cycle by storm over the past two weeks.

“Our job as we look at it is to rank the teams and to follow our protocols,” CFP committee chair Boo Corrigan said this evening. “As we went through it, (the sign-stealing scandal) wasn’t part of any of the discussions that occurred during our time together.

“We really view it as an NCAA issue, not a CFP issue,” Corrigan continued. “At this point in time, as we’re looking at this, we want to make sure we get — not just the top four teams — but the top 25 teams, right?”

Regardless of tonight’s ranking, Michigan football has a clear path to the playoff: beat Penn State (11), beat Ohio State (1), and win the Big Ten title. Not much else will do if Jim Harbaugh and his Wolverines want to appear in a third-straight College Football Playoff and make a push for the national championship.
