Penn State has better national title odds than Michigan football

Somehow, Penn State has better national national title odds than Michigan football going into the 2024 season.

Following spring practices in college football, the odds for the 2024 national champion have been updated. For the most part, they make sense. Michigan football rival Ohio State is near the top of the list but Georgia is No. 1. Texas, Oregon, and Alabama round out the top five.

Michigan football has the ninth-best odds according to Vegas oddsmakers, which is probably fair. I don’t have an issue with that. What I do have an issue with or at least question is the fact that Penn State has better national title odds than the Wolverines.

Michigan football’s odds for the national championship are +2200. The odds for Penn State are +2000. They are +450 for Ohio State; +850 for Oregon and +750 for Texas. Georgia is plus 300.

The Bulldogs make sense as the clear favorite. They have tons of talent, a head coach who has won a national championship before, and a proven quarterback. Ohio State has one of those three things. Ryan Day has gotten to the national title game but has fallen short.

His team is capable but I won’t believe Will Howard can beat a team like Georgia until I see it. I don’t see him as an upgrade over Kyle McCord.

Penn State having better odds than Michigan of winning the national title is strange though. James Franklin is known for blowing it in big games. The defense will be stout. Drew Allar will probably be better but not national championship caliber.

Alex Orji or another quarterback would need to be much, much better than expected for the Wolverines to win the national title, but I’d bet on U-M against Penn State on a neutral field.

Sherrone Moore has already outcoached James Franklin once. He can do it again and the Wolverines have a team that could beat Penn State by running it 32 times in a row, again.

Just food for thought.
