Barstool Sports founder and pizza influencer Dave Portnoy went on a four-shop tour of RI pizza places Thursday and stopped at Francesco's on Hope St. after owner Frank Schiavone got Portnoy's attention with some confident signage.

Last week Dave Portnoy vowed to use his massive platform as the President of Barstool Sports to land Michigan a top ten quarterback in the transfer portal. On Thursday, Portnoy said that he and head coach Sherrone Moore have actually had conversations about Name Image and Likeness (NIL) deals, and how they could get it done.

“I had Daniella, my assistant, ‘Someone at Michigan wants —,’ no. I don’t want to talk to any of you,” Portnoy said. “I talked to Sherrone. I talked to him. I have his number, we talked. He told me the one guy I got to talk to. One guy to talk to, I’ve not talked to that person. I will, and then we’ll see.”

Not as much clarity as Michigan fans might have hoped for, but it’s a start. Portnoy said he got more than he bargained for following his initial comments.

“That’s one of those things (where) maybe I wish I put the genie back in the bottle,” Portnoy said. “I’ve had quite literally everybody under the sun from Michigan reach out.”

Portnoy to Help More Than Michigan Football?

Portnoy said he’s been getting calls about helping other athletic programs at Michigan, and he clarified how much he wants to spend in this endeavor.

“I don’t want to spend anything, I was just saying it, but yeah,” Portnoy said about spending $2 million for a quarterback. “($3 million) for the right guy, and who knows with the market. The market’s probably moving up and up and up.”

Portnoy said he wants to make sure the player would actually be able to appear on Barstool Sports talk shows.

“The football team could tell me what they do, but I want the person to work for Barstool,” Portnoy said. “ We could get some value out of that (with the player) being on, like, Pardon My Take or the College Football Show. I don’t want just no connection with whoever this person is.”
