It looks like Aaron Glenn won’t be the only new addition out of Detroit to help revamp the NY Jets program this fall. Michigan graduate and Metro Detroit native Donovan Edwards is proving his potential to be a massive asset for the Jets already, standing out in rookie minicamp. Edwards was the only player from Michigan’s 2025 class who was invited to the NFL Combine but was not drafted.
Edwards subsequently signed as a free agent with the New York Jets just minutes after the draft ended, and was certainly one of the biggest grabs for New York post-draft. The Jets’ new head coach, Aaron Glenn, came to New York from Detroit as well, after working as the defensive coordinator under Dan Campbell for the Lions. Glenn made his philosophy clear when he arrived in New York, explaining, “Once you get in the building, you have a shot.” (Heavy)
Edwards Clearly Took Glenn’s Words to Heart
Edwards certainly understands that because he’s made his way to the building, he’s got as good a shot as any, and he intends to seize that shot to the best of his ability. Jets X-Factor columnist Nick Faria says, “Edwards doesn’t have blazing speed, but he showed patience and good maneuverability to find gaping holes during 11-on-11 work.” He continued, “Edwards is going to make things very interesting moving forward in the running back room.”
This analysis should come as no surprise to Michigan fans who have watched the running back’s development in the maize and blue over the years; Edwards is no stranger to competition, and he is well aware of his strengths at the position. Having shared the position with Blake Corum, followed by Kalel Mullings, both of whom were drafted, Edwards knows what he has to do to stand out. Patience and maneuverability, noted already by Jets analysts, are two strengths of his which he is clearly already showing off in New York.
It seems Edwards has already forgotten the “adversity” of going undrafted in April. He understands the opportunity in front of him, and what’s at stake for his career. As such, he’s already started making the New York Jets understand, too.
