Phil Steele has ranked Michigan football running back Donovan Edwards among the top backs in college football. Steele, the venerable college football expert has Edwards ranked No. 8 and I still don’t think that’s high enough.

For the first time, Edwards will go into the season as RB1. He will be the main guy this season. Kalel Mullings will play a big role, just like Edwards did in the past but if the Wolverines are going to reach the College Football Playoff, Edwards needs to be an elite running back.

We have seen Edwards shine as the starting running back before for Michigan football. When Blake Corum was hurt in 2022, Edwards had a three-game stretch against Ohio State, Purdue, and TCU.

In three huge games, the Michigan football star rushed an average of 23 times for 173 yards. I’m not sure if Edwards can do that for a full season, but if he does, he’ll be in New York as a Heisman Trophy finalist.

Michigan running game will be elite

The offensive line might have five new starters this season but Myles Hinton has first-round pick potential. Greg Crippen and Giovanni El-Hadi could start for just about anyone in the Big Ten and Josh Priebe was Third-Team All-Big Ten last season for Northwestern.

Put another way: if there’s one thing I’m not worried about on offense this season, it’s the offensive line. I guess the running game as a whole because Edwards is about to go off. I’ve said it before but with Steele’s ranking, I’ll say it again: Edwards will have a monster season.

Steele is going to wish he had ranked him higher.
