It’s hard not to be excited about the hire of Dusty May as Michigan basketball head coach. Some fans weren’t thrilled with the hire, but it’s hard to be mad about someone John Beilein endorses.

If Beilein didn’t believe in Dusty May, I doubt that he would have assisted in the Michigan basketball head coaching search or taken part in a meeting with May and Warde Manuel to convince him.

Coach Beilein is a Michigan legend and he did the Wolverines another solid in helping bring May on board. Yet, Warde Manuel deserves plenty of credit too, as we said. This was a big-time hire and Louisville appeared to have it in the bag.

It’s not often that Michigan pulls out the late win off the field. That’s why this feels so awesome. National college basketball analysts like the move too, including Jay Bilas of ESPN who described it as a “home run” for the Wolverines on ESPN’s College Gameday.

Tons of praise for Michigan basketball hire of Dusty May

“I think it’s a great hire,” Bilas said. “I think Dusty May is one of the bright young stars in coaching right now. He’s the real deal. His offensive concepts are outstanding, he’s a great team guy. He brings the entire university in. I think he’s a home run at Michigan.”

Seth Greenberg, the former Virginia Tech head coach, said of May: “He’s a John Beilein type. A lot of similar traits. He’s a good fit at Michigan.’

Chris Balas of The Wolverine also quoted a coaching source, who told him “Nobody will outwork” Dusty May. He was even compared to Bo Schembechler in terms of his commitment to winning.

That all sounds good to me. May runs great stuff offensively. He knows how to recruit and retain players, plus the analytics look good too. There’s a lot to like about Dusty May and Michigan basketball fans aren’t the only ones excited for the future of the Wolverines.
