A former Michigan football player, Andre Seldon Jr., who spent two seasons with the Wolverines in 2020 and 2021, died on Saturday due to an apparent drowning after a cliff-diving accident.

According to a release from the Cache County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred at approximately 2:20 p.m. Seldon, 22, was cliff diving at the Porcupine Dam. He dove into the water and didn’t resurface. His body was later found by the authorities.

“At approximately 9:05 p.m. the Utah Department of Public Safety dive team located the young deceased male underwater in Porcupine Reservoir,” the Cache County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release Saturday night. “The name of the individual will be withheld until additional notifications can occur. The male was identified as a student-athlete at Utah State University. Any additional information may be released by Utah State University. Our initial investigation leads us to believe this is a tragic accident as multiple witnesses recount the same information. Our heartfelt condolences go to family and friends of the student-athlete. Students who may be struggling with this event can reach out to the University for mental health services.”

Seldon played in two games for Michigan football before he transferred to New Mexico State. Seldon thrived there over the past two seasons playing in 28 games, registering 97 total tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, two interceptions, and 11 pass breakups before joining the Utah State football team last spring.

“Our Utah State University Athletics family is devastated over the sudden death of Andre Seldon Jr.,” athletic director Diana Sabau said in a statement released by the school. “We extend our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, teammates, and all who loved Andre.”
