Ahead of the 2023 college football season, former Michigan football quarterback Cade McNamara, who had a solid career with the Maize and Blue, entered the transfer portal and committed to Iowa. Recently, 247 Sports rated this former Wolverine as one of the top 25 transfer QBs, as he aims to lead his new team to their first Big Ten title in nearly two decades.

In 2021, Cade McNamara played a crucial role in one of the most remarkable single-season turnarounds in college football history, transforming Michigan’s record from 2-4 in 2020 to an impressive 12-2 in 2021. The former Michigan football quarterback led the Maize and Blue squad to their first Big Ten title since 2004 and secured their inaugural College Football Playoff berth. Recognizing his outstanding performance in 2021, McNamara was named a 3rd-team All-Big Ten quarterback. However, his time in Ann Arbor was short-lived, and he subsequently chose to transfer.

During Week 2 of the 2022 season, then-sophomore QB JJ McCarthy, a former five-star recruit, earned the starting position and guided the team to a 13-1 finish, securing another Big Ten title and a College Football Playoff berth. As a result of this changing of the guard, Cade McNamara entered the transfer portal and swiftly committed to the Iowa Hawkeyes, a fellow Big Ten program.

Looking ahead to the 2023 college football season, McNamara aims to replicate his success at Iowa, revitalizing the team and guiding them to their first conference championship in several decades. In the new transfer portal QB rankings by 247, the former Wolverine made the top 25, securing the 24th spot nationally.

Iowa hasn’t historically been renowned for its quarterback play, making McNamara a valuable upgrade for the Black and Gold this year. However, given the offensive tendencies of Iowa’s system, expectations for McNamara may not be excessively high at this point.
