On Monday morning, ESPN announced that Michigan football head coach Sherrone Moore will be suspended for two games this fall, at home against Central Michigan in week three, and at Nebraska in week four. The suspension is self-imposed by the University, and will prohibit Moore from taking part in any of his coaching duties during the two week period.
The suspension comes as a result of the 2023 scouting scandal run by former Michigan football analyst, Connor Stalions. Stalions was accused of stealing signs and advanced scouting of Michigan’s opponents, a scandal which resulted in Stalions’ termination.
This is the Third Season Which has been Impacted by Stalions’ Scandal
Former head coach Jim Harbaugh was suspended at the end of the 2023 season in relation to the scandal as well, giving Sherrone Moore, the offensive coordinator at the time, a chance to act as interim head coach. When Harbaugh left to take the head coaching position for the LA Chargers, it only made sense that Moore would succeed him in 2024 with his experience coaching at the end of the 2023 season.
This self-imposed suspension of Coach Moore seems to be a proactive way of taking responsibility, as it was reported that Moore had deleted a string of 52 text messages with Connor Stalions at the time of the scandal. The texts have since been recovered, and Moore has been cooperative with the NCAA, likely very eager to put Connor Stalions’ infamous legacy at Michigan to rest.
The timing of the suspension will allow Coach Moore to lead his team in the season opener against New Mexico, and at his alma mater, Oklahoma.
