Right now, Michigan football QB JJ McCarthy is among the nation’s top contenders for the 2023 Heisman Trophy — college football’s most prestigious individual award. That said, while McCarthy is a leader in the current betting odds, one Heisman voter went public with his feelings toward the Wolverines’ junior quarterback amid the infamous sign-stealing scandal. He says that JJ will “pay the price” for Michigan’s alleged sign-stealing and that he will not have McCarthy on his ballot this year.

Heisman voter says Michigan football QB will “pay price” on his ballot

Gregg Doyel, a writer for IndyStar and a 2023 Heisman Trophy voter, has come out publicly stating that he will be taking JJ McCarthy off of his Heisman Trophy ballot this year due to the allegations of illegal sign-stealing against Michigan football.

“Maybe Connor Stalions should get my Heisman vote,” Doyel said in a tweet, advertising his article on JJ McCarthy and the Heisman Trophy. “I d*mn sure can’t give it to Michigan QB JJ McCarthy, who seems like a great kid but who is on the list of those betrayed by Jim Harbaugh.

“This is not JJ McCarthy’s fault,” he added in his opinion column. “But thanks to the Michigan coaching staff, he will pay the price. At least on my ballot. Because, unlike Jim Harbaugh, I plan to sleep tonight with a clear conscience.”

JJ McCarthy may drop in Heisman Trophy race due to sign-stealing allegations

Now, as a Heisman Trophy voter, you really aren’t supposed to comment on the Heisman race; however, Doyel made it perfectly clear where he stands on that rule and Michigan football quarterback JJ McCarthy in his latest article. According to Doyel, he decided it was time to be “like Jim Harbaugh and break a rule” while writing his newest column on the Wolverines’ sign-stealing scandal and its impact on the Heisman race.

Doyel cites reasons such as fairness to other Heisman contenders, integrity of the game, integrity of the Heisman, and more. He also states that, while it is not the fault of JJ McCarthy that Michigan football got caught up in this, McCarthy will be an “innocent victim” of the sign-stealing scandal when it comes to his 2023 Heisman Trophy ballot.

While Doyel is the only voter who has gone public with his feelings on McCarthy and his Heisman contention, there is much speculation that other voters may feel the same or could be convinced by voters like Doyel.
