The Big Ten was affected by realignment perhaps more than any other conference. Adding Oregon, UCLA, USC, and Washington raised the quality of a conference that was routinely one of the three best in college football every year.
Six of the conference’s 18 teams were named to the preseason AP Top 25 Poll and they were all in action this past weekend, going a combined 17-Minnesota’s 19-17 loss to North Carolina was the conference’s lone setback.
Each of the six programs remained in the rankings, with no additional teams joining them.
Take a look at where they wound up below. 👇
Big Ten Teams in Week 2 AP Poll
No. 2 Ohio State
The Ohio State Buckeyes remained the No.2-ranked team in the nation. They began their year with a non-conference matchup against a poor opponent. Ohio State routed the Akron Zips 52-6 and will face the Western Michigan Broncos in Week 2.
No. 7 Oregon
The Oregon Ducks dropped four spots from third to seventh in the rankings. They faced the Idaho Vandals, an FCS program, in their season opener. While they picked up a 24-14 win, it was not pretty, leading to the slide in the rankings. Oregon will face the Boise State Broncos in Week 2.
No. 8 Penn State
The Penn State Nittany Lions maintained the eighth spot in the AP Top 25 Poll. They went on the road and beat the West Virginia Mountaineers 34-12 in Week 1. Penn State will take on the Bowling Green Falcons this weekend.
No. 10 Michigan
The Michigan Wolverines dropped one spot and are now ranked tenth in the nation despite a 30-10 victory over the Fresno State Bulldogs. They will play in what figures to be the game of the week in Week 2. The No.3-ranked Texas Longhorns are set to visit Ann Arbor.
No. 13 USC
The USC Trojans were the biggest risers in this week’s AP Top 25 Poll. They jumped ten spots, from 23rd to 13th, after beating the LSU Tigers 27-20. USC is set to face the Utah State Aggies in Week 2.
No. 21 Iowa
The Iowa Hawkeyes also made a decent jump, rising from 25th to 21st. They blew the Illinois State Redbirds out in a 40-0 blowout. Iowa will face the intrastate rival Iowa State Cyclones on Saturday.
