Hunter Thomson finished his collegiate career tying for 77th at the NCAA Championship over the weekend, missing the final cut with a 54-hole score of 224 (+8). As the 24th ranked player in the PGA Tour University top-25, Thomson earned an exempt membership on the PGA Tour Americas for the rest of the 2025 season.
PGA Tour University gives 25 seniors a chance to turn pro every year: the top ranked senior earns a membership to the PGA Tour, numbers 2-10 go to the Korn Ferry Tour and the rest (Nos. 11-25) head to the PGA Tour Americas.
Michigan senior Hunter Thomson could compete on PGA Tour Americas this summer
After ending his career as Michigan’s all-time scoring leader (71.53 average), Thomson is No. 68 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings. Over the past 104 weeks, the Canadian has 23 top-10 finishes and four wins, most recently taking the victory at the NCAA Urbana regional.
Thomson started 50 consecutive events as a Wolverine and never missed a tournament. His professional career could start this summer, as the North America Swing of the PGA Tour Americas begins in July and runs through September.
There are 16 events in total on the PGA Tour Americas, with six being played in the Latin America Swing and ten being played in the North America Swing. According to the PGA website, here is how Thomson can advance from the PGA Tour Americas:
“All 16 tournaments will be a four-day, 72-hole stroke play competition featuring a 36-hole cut after two rounds. Play will be conducted per the traditional calendar scheme of Thursday-Sunday.
After the first 15 events, the top 120 players on the PGA TOUR Americas Points List will be eligible for the Fortinet Cup Championship. The top 10 players on the final 2025 Fortinet Cup Standings will earn exempt Korn Ferry Tour membership for the 2026 season, while the top 80 players will retain PGA TOUR Americas membership through Segment I of 2026.
In addition to 10 exempt Korn Ferry Tour cards via the season-long points race, up to five conditional Korn Ferry Tour cards are available to the top two finishers in the Latin America Swing and the top three finishers in the North America Swing, if these players do not finish in the top 10 on the final Fortinet Cup Standings.
The top two players from the Latin America Swing can upgrade to exempt Korn Ferry Tour status for the 2025 season with a top-10 finish in the final Fortinet Cup Standings.”
