It wasn’t long ago that Michigan State fans were having some social media fun pointing out that the Spartans 2025 recruiting class was ranked ahead of Michigan football.
I understand Sparty fans wanting to brag. I mean they haven’t had anything to cheer about on the gridiron since they beat Michigan football back in 2021. It’s been nothing but a disaster since.
Tuck wasn’t coming after all. Mel Tucker got himself fired before the start of last season in embarrassing fashion. Jonathan Smith was a solid hire. I do think he’s going to do a good job for Michigan State down the road, but it’s going to take time and it’s a hard job when you have to compete against Michigan football.
Michigan State fans mocked Michigan football recruiting
Yet, that didn’t stop Michigan State fans from having some fun at the hands of Michigan football. The Wolverines recruiting class started a little slow and for a short time, the Spartans were ranked ahead of Michigan.
That was one month ago. As Scott Bell, a noted troller of Michigan State on social media, pointed out on Tuesday, things have changed a lot in a month.
Michigan State was ranked 51st in the 2025 recruiting rankings (via 247 Sports) and Michigan football was ranked No. 52. Sparty had seven commitments at the time (zero four-stars) while Michigan football had five at the time (all four-stars).
It’s curious how Sparty was ranked ahead of Michigan football even then, but after Michigan landed 10 commitments in 2025 in the last month (11 total) and three who ranked in the top 118 overall in the 2025 class, the Wolverines have surged to 11th in the 2025 recruiting rankings. They are also ranked eighth in terms of average rating per commitment.
Michigan State is recruiting like a little brother
Michigan State on the other hand, despite adding seven commitments since June 10th, giving MSU a total of 14, ranks 53rd now in the team rankings according to 247 Sports. The Spartans don’t have a single four-star commitment or a commit who ranks in the top 500.
Michigan football has 13 blue-chip commitments (6th most in the 2025 class) and has an 86 percent blue-chip percentage in the 2025 class compared to zero for MSU. In fact, over the past three recruiting classes, MSU has just 15 blue-chip signees.
So there’s a realistic chance that the Wolverines could have more blue-chip signees in 2025 alone, than MSU could have in 2023, 2024, and 2025 combined, which makes the mid-June troll of Sparty fans even funnier.
